Position Summary

Establishes and maintains a sterile field for surgical procedures meeting the high standards of SPMH. Prepares surgical suites and assists surgeons during surgical procedures.

Organizational Requirements

Incorporate the SPH organization-wide, and department specific mission and philosophy into the delivery of high quality services. This includes following the guidelines of the department’s and the organization’s customer service plan in delivering services. All services and interactions will be provided with respect of the importance of confidentiality, high integrity and honesty. Interact with all individuals with equally high respect and care, regardless of race, national origin, religion, sex, marital status, disability, age, sexual orientation, financial background, or other prohibited category. In addition, each employee is responsible to support a respectful work environment, free from any form of harassment. Responsible for being competent in knowing techniques and skills, to adjust interactions and care to assure accommodation to individuals of all ages, and diverse backgrounds, or any other protected category. Responsible to keep informed and current of SPH’s activities and adhere to pertinent information which influences employees’ activities as communicated through Administration, Human Resources, Department Directors, payroll announcements, department meetings, Employee Newsletter or other forms of communication. Perform duties in compliance with regulatory requirements, ie: JC, HFAP, Wisconsin Administrative Codes, OSHA, CMS/Medicare, etc, as well as department-specific requirements.

Position Technical Responsibilities

Responsible to keep informed and current of SPMH & Clinic’s activities, and adhere to pertinent information which influences employees’ activities as communicated through Administration, Human Resources, Department Managers, payroll attachments, department meetings, Time out to Talk, Employee Newsletter or other forms of communication Perform duties in compliance with regulatory requirements, ie: JCAHO, Wisconsin Administrative Codes, OSHA, HCFA/Medicare, etc, as well as department-specific requirements. Establish and maintains sterile field for surgical procedures. Plan and gather equipment and supplies for all surgical procedures. Open all equipment and supplies for surgical procedures. Set up procedures. Ready all instruments, equipment and supplies for the case. Assist with prepping and sterile draping of patients. Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, clamping tissues and "bleeders," and operating cameras and surgical equipment. Assist with closing of surgical wounds. Responsible for all counts along with RN. Universal precautions are strictly adhered to Assist with reprocessing and sterilization of all instruments. Assist with cleaning of equipment, surgical suites and storage rooms. Treat all patients equally, with compassion, and without regard to social status, medical condition or race. Adhere to the Surgery Department Code of Ethics as it pertains to other team members. Protect patients' rights. Order supplies as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Must remain alert, aware and able to anticipate unexpected situations. Must be ready for any emergency during surgical procedures and able to anticipate the surgeons’ needs for instruments and supplies. Commitment to quality is expected as well as a professional, cheerful, sensitive and caring attitude toward patients, their family members, visitors and coworkers. Errors may result in somewhat serious consequences involving patient care and treatment. Must be familiar with and committed to following all department and SPH standards, policies, practices and procedures. Courtesy, tact and ability to get along with coworkers as a team member and ability to keep sensitive information about patients and others strictly confidential.
