A major objective of the Diadromous Fisheries Program is to monitor selected sites across the state for diadromous fish species. These sites are typically at fishways, structures that enable migratory fish to swim above dams to reach upstream habitats. Some fishways are equipped with monitoring equipment to count passing fish; SRAs will be trained to record, download data, troubleshoot equipment, inspect fishways, and clear debris to ensure water flow. SRAs will assist in transplanting diadromous fish by trapping, loading into transport trucks, and releasing fish into other streams to restore populations. They must be able to run short distances with a net full of fish weighing up to 50 pounds. Training will include methods to collect fish, such as trapping, netting, and electrofishing, which require wading in chest-deep, flowing water over rocky bottoms.
