Overview
The Customs Entry Writer is responsible for managing the complete import customs clearance process for both air and ocean freight shipments. The role ensures regulatory accuracy, timely release of cargo, and full compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Partner Government Agencies (PGA). The position requires precise execution of entry documentation, classification, valuation, and recordkeeping under 19 CFR standards. Key Responsibilities
Prepare, file, and track customs entries through ABI/ACE for air and ocean shipments. Verify import documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, arrival notices, and bills of lading. Classify goods accurately under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS) ensuring correct duty and tax calculation. Communicate with U.S. Customs, FDA, USDA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies to ensure clearance compliance. Monitor ISF filings and coordinate with carriers, terminals, and drayage providers to ensure timely cargo release. Identify and resolve documentation or data discrepancies impacting clearance or billing. Maintain client SOPs and compliance requirements for designated accounts. Prepare post-entry corrections, protests, and binding ruling requests as required. Support brokers, managers, and clients with technical customs guidance. Ensure recordkeeping accuracy and audit readiness under CBP 19 CFR 163. Required Experience
Minimum 3–5 years of customs brokerage experience within a licensed freight forwarder or customs broker. Strong working knowledge of both air and ocean import processes. Proven accuracy in HTS classification, valuation, and PGA submission. Familiarity with CargoWise, Descartes, or similar brokerage systems. Experience managing multiple clearances in a high-volume environment. Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) preferred but not required. Knowledge & Skills
Comprehensive understanding of U.S. import regulations, CBP procedures, and PGA requirements. Strong data accuracy, document control, and time management skills. Proficiency in ACE, ABI, and Microsoft Office Suite. Detail-oriented communicator with the ability to liaise confidently with clients and government agencies. Strong analytical capability for tariff research and compliance interpretation. Compliance & Systems
Ensures all customs entries meet Reasonable Care standards. Maintains full audit compliance, confidentiality, and data integrity. Supports C-TPAT and FMC compliance programs as part of company policy. Compensation & Reporting
