Summary The Surgical Assistant is a member of the surgical team in the Operating Room, working with the Attending Surgeon(s), Residents, Perfusion, and Registered Nurses, delivering direct patient care before, during and after surgery. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. Responsibilities

Develop ideals and a professional attitude to promote responsibility as an individual and as a member of the surgical team. Coordinate team efforts to offer the most qualified team support to the surgical patient, surgeon, and all members of the surgical team. Develop awareness of the patient as an individual, with specific psychological and physical needs, respecting the patient’s inherent right to privacy, dignity, and safety. Develop and improve skills in all aspects of operating room technique, both routine and special procedures, and apply them in a professional manner. Execute all tasks utilizing principles of asepsis and good sterile technique. Prepare patient for surgery including but not limited to surgical scrub preparation, positioning, draping, sterile field maintenance. Insert Foley catheters under the supervision of a physician. Assist surgeon in tying off and coagulation of vessels as necessary under the supervision of a physician. Act as surgeon’s second assistant throughout procedures, including holding retractors and other specific tasks as required. Assist in patient transfer pre and post operatively from the operating room table. All invasive procedures are to be under the direction and supervision of a physician. Assist in preparation and application of sterile dressings post operatively. Perform other duties as necessary during the operative procedure as directed by the surgeon. Assist surgical team in transporting patients’ pre and post operatively. Assist surgical team by gathering necessary supplies including sterile instrument trays and positioning equipment. Assist in coordinating training of new staff in the area as necessary. In conjunction with operating room personnel to ensure availability of adequate supplies, instruments and equipment for operative procedures. Participate in research activities. Assist in assembly of sterile supplies and checking expiration dates. Assist in stocking supplies in the department as necessary. Assist in maintaining Joint Commission standards, utilizing downtime to survey the department and correct problems as necessary. Performs related duties as required by the department of operating room services. Required Job Qualifications: High School diploma. Illinois Registered Surgical Assistant License. Certified Surgical Assistant. Demonstrates knowledge and competence on all surgical services. Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with all members of surgical team and multi disciplines. Qualifications
