Surgical Technologist - Surgical Services - Full Time/Days - Req# 2080657864 Role at Antelope Valley Medical Center. The Surgical Technologist must competently assist the surgeon during operative or invasive procedures and maintain the integrity of the sterile field at all times. The Surgical Technologist functions under the supervision of the registered nurse. Responsibilities

Ensure the operating room and environment are ready prior to the patient being brought in. Ensure all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are available for the case. Consult the surgeon's preference card and communicate irregularities to the circulating nurse. Confirm instruments and equipment are in proper working condition before the case begins. Validate operating room humidity and temperature are within appropriate range and report irregularities. Open necessary supplies using appropriate sterile technique. Continuously validate sterility of products and instrumentation on the sterile field. Report any break in sterility or irregularities to the circulating nurse. Follow department policy for hand scrub, gowning, gloving, and draping prior to surgery. Set up the sterile field for clear visualization during counts and perform all counts per policy. Assist in positioning and draping the patient according to department standards and surgeon preferences. Do not hand a scalpel or instrument to begin the procedure until after the Time Out is completed. Anticipate the surgeon's needs and pass appropriate instruments during the procedure. Maintain sterile technique while operating specialized equipment and handling instruments, needles, and devices. Account for needles, sponges, instruments, and foreign bodies during the intra-operative phase. Properly handle, identify, label, and dispose of specimens; differentiate right and left tissues when required. Accept medications onto the field only after validating order, label, and expiration date. Assist with room turnover and clean/prepare equipment for decontamination as required. Assist with transporting patients and maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. Support the surgical team by updating skills and knowledge through in-services and educational opportunities. None. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of surgical asepsis and sterile technique. Knowledge of proper instrumentation, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures. Ability to demonstrate competency in the use of new technologies related to equipment and procedures. Education and Experience

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or a minimum of 15 years of experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting is required. Surgical Technologist certification is highly preferred. One year experience as a Surgical Technologist in a Medical Center or surgery center setting is preferred. Experience in main Surgery across multiple specialties is preferred. Required Licensure and Certifications

BLS/BCLS High School Diploma or equivalent AVMC Conduct/Compliance Expectations

Work under stressful emotional and physical conditions May require night and weekend call shifts Possible exposure to contaminated instruments, wet/humid conditions, fumes, chemicals, electrical risk, and radiation A detailed description of the physical requirements is maintained in the Employee Health Department.
