The primary purpose and function of the Locum Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of pets. Essential Responsibilities Ensure the safety of pets, clients and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols and maintaining clean, sterile and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs. Obtain relevant information and history from clients, and maintain proper and complete medical records. Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, any diagnosis or treatment, hospital services and other related information. Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service including prescribing and administering preventative care for the wellness needs of pets and diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of pets. Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plan to the veterinary medical team and client. Ensure local, state and federal laws are followed, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log. Understand and follow state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians. Other job duties as assigned. Surgical skills – proven ability to perform all basic surgeries with standard medical instruments and equipment. Problem solving – identifies, analyzes and translates problems into practical solutions. Client service – provides attentive, courteous and informative service; aims for client satisfaction. Intellectual ability – follows instructions accurately and can provide directions. Compassionate commitment to pet care – advocates for the pet and presents treatment recommendations to clients. Mathematical ability – basic arithmetic and unit conversions. Computer skills – proficient with computers and veterinary software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook). Management ability – enforces policies, maintains morale, and uses coaching approaches for performance. Attitudes (Will Do) Initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and resilience under stress. Special Working Conditions Confident around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.). Hours may exceed 40 per week and may include weekends and evenings. Reasoning, memory, math and language abilities required (English). Moderate noise level in the work environment. Ability to stand, walk, and perform duties that may require lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch; potential exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medications/controlled substances. Limited travel may be required (e.g., vendor visits, associate education). Experience, Education and/or Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree. License in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license. Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries with standard instruments.
