The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community that provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join us in the education of the children at MSD. LOCATION OF POSITION MSD, Frederick Campus, 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705 Main Purpose of Job A Residential Child and Youth Care Practitioner (RCYCP) at the Maryland School for the Deaf provides guidance to deaf and hard of hearing students by serving as a mentor and role model, offering advice and assistance with everyday life skills, and providing referrals to other staff. Employees receive general supervision from a RCYCP Supervisor or designated administrator and might be asked to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. They may also be required to travel for events such as field trips and workshops. POSITION DUTIES Maintain a safe environment and ensure student safety at all times. Make weekly contact with parents/guardians and teachers as required by supervisor. Inform parents of student development through calls, letters, and meetings. Interact with students to offer guidance and discuss their problems. Teach and assist students in complying with daily schedules, including homework and personal hygiene. Document and report student concerns to the RCYCP Supervisor. Assess emergency and crisis situations and provide interim assistance until specialized help is available. Develop, implement, and monitor student activities. Participate in the development of educational programs and workshops. Maintain confidentiality of student and school personnel information. Participate in professional development. Make periodic safety checks of student residences. Provide support during travel to events. Perform other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Must be either 21 years old with graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, or at least 18 years old with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: One year of experience providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing youth in a student life setting. Fluency in American Sign Language is required. Skill in written English sufficient for communication with students and parents who are not proficient in American Sign Language is also necessary. DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of the physical, emotional, and social aspects of deafness; understanding of legal and ethical issues in residential care; post-secondary training in counseling, child development, or education; experience in a residential school for the deaf or another childcare facility; ability to maintain a positive dormitory environment; and a valid driver’s license. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS RCYCP certification required. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland for those assigned driving duties. Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Proficiency in American Sign Language and written English. Pass a medical examination and annual tuberculosis screening. Subject to substance abuse testing. Criminal background check required. Obtain RCYCP certification within 180 days of hiring. 40 hours of DHS training annually and 20 hours of CEU every two years for RCYCP certification. Provide three letters of recommendation. Leave may be granted after 120 days of work, accruing at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
