Job Summary The purpose of the Equipment Repair Technician is to maintain the equipment and tools for the Department of Design in support of its three Design majors: BFA in Interior Design, BS in Industrial Design, and the BA in Design.
Key Responsibilities
Handle the repair, adjustments, and routine maintenance of the Department of Design shops and lab facilities.
Provide special technical assistance to faculty and students working with department equipment as needed and requested.
Provide scheduled preventative maintenance for all department equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of equipment maintenance and repair practices, including the use of hand tools for electrical and mechanical work, and experience operating CNC equipment. They should be familiar with the terminology and functions of mechanical and electrical systems, and capable of servicing both general and specialized equipment used in Design Department shops. Strong mechanical aptitude, basic arithmetic skills, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions are essential. Additionally, manual dexterity and precision in handling equipment parts are key to success in this role.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to one year of journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical mechanical equipment requiring construction and fabrication skills, some precision work, and trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials, or specialized knowledge and skill related to unusual equipment required.
Equivalent to two years of experience in the servicing, maintenance, operation, or assembly of equipment, including experience using hand tools to make adjustments following specific procedures for maintenance or equivalent to two years of trade school or apprentice training in equipment repair preferred.
Physical Summary
Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.

Compensation and Hiring Range
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
Hiring range: $2,045 (Step 1) – $2,698.50 (Step 15) per month (commensurate with candidate).
CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,045 (Step 1) – $2,979.50 (Step 20) per month.
Time Base
50 time‑base, part‑time.
Duration of Appointment This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
Benefits Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.
