Facilities & Equipment Engineer, Production Control, Semi
Tesla, Sparks, Nevada, United States, 89494
What To Expect
As the Facilities & Equipment Engineer for the Semi Production Control team at Gigafactory Nevada, you will be responsible for leading the engineering, deployment, sustainment, and continuous improvement of equipment used for material flow across all operational areas of the Semi program. This includes a robust fleet of Automated Mobile Robots (AMRs), tugger systems, dock equipment, specialized racks, and other conveyance technologies critical to achieving a forklift-free and highly efficient material handling system. This role requires strong technical and operational leadership to ensure the reliability, serviceability, and scalability of equipment, as well as the ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams (Manufacturing, MFE, Facilities, Maintenance, Quality, Controls, and Suppliers) to anticipate operational needs and execute sustainable engineering strategies.
What You’ll Do
Lead the lifecycle strategy for all equipment used in material flow, including AMRs, smart carts, charging stations, transfer conveyors, ergonomic tuggers, specialized racks, and dock automation systems
Oversee the preventive and reactive maintenance programs for equipment critical to material delivery, ensuring 24/7 uptime in coordination with site maintenance team
Develop and enforce standard operating procedures, checklists, and KPIs for reliability, service intervals, spare parts management, and safety
Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to scale Semi’s unique logistics system, supporting dynamic changes in takt time, line configurations, and PFEP requirements
Drive root cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions for equipment failures, leveraging structured problem-solving tools (DMAIC, 8D)
Collaborate with Automation & Controls teams to integrate new logic, vision, and safety features into equipment and AMRs via PLC, Python, SQL, and MES tools
Manage vendor relationships, technical validations (FAT/SAT), and onboarding of new technologies to improve equipment reliability and ergonomic performance
Work closely with the Material Flow Engineering (MFE) and Production Control (PC) teams to optimize fleet configuration, charging infrastructure, and route logic
Establish training programs and documentation for operators and technicians to ensure sustainable local ownership of material flow systems. Track and report equipment performance metrics (OEE, MTBF, MTTR) and build visibility dashboards for senior leadership
Support pilot phases (RC/CP) of new systems and coordinate material validation activities prior to launch ramps
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent experience
Minimum 5 years of experience in equipment or material flow systems engineering, preferably in high-volume or automotive manufacturing
Demonstrated leadership in AMR fleet deployment and sustainment, preferably using OTTO, MiR, or similar platforms
Experience with PLC troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff) and robotic integration
Ability to read and modify technical schematics, CAD layouts, and system logic
Experience managing preventive maintenance strategies and equipment life cycle programs. Familiarity with MES systems, SQL databases, Python scripting, and automated reporting tools
Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills, with the ability to influence without authority
Willingness to work flexible hours and provide hands-on support during early shifts, ramp periods, or weekends, as required
Prior experience supporting new factory launches or brownfield transformations. Knowledge of War Room logistics, PFEP development, and Phase Gate (RC/CP) rollout strategies
Comfortable managing multicultural teams and vendors. Certification or training in Lean Manufacturing, TPM, Six Sigma, or equivalent frameworks
