In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Function in a water process engineer role as a technical specialist or in a lead process engineer position in conventional water treatment (coagulation, clarification, softening, media filtration) and advanced processes (membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, UV/AOP, ozonation, carbon adsorption, and/or distribution system water quality). Apply advanced water treatment and engineering techniques to solve complex water quality and treatment challenges. Develop skills to provide technical guidance to a group, supervise engineering staff on projects, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary design teams to implement complex treatment solutions. Develop and present technical evaluations and recommendations to clients and key stakeholders. Assist and, in some cases, lead business development activities and external marketing opportunities, such as presenting at conferences, maintaining client relationships, and supporting new business pursuits and proposal development. Your role would include diverse opportunities in water treatment and process design, including conventional water treatment, brackish and seawater desalination, reuse, and mining water. You will be part of a team directing process design for projects worldwide for a global engineering firm, with career stability and growth potential consistent with a strong backlog and revenue growth. Black & Veatch Process Engineers develop technical solutions that support winning work and drive design deliverables for critical infrastructure projects. Our team of over 200 process engineers supports water, industrial, next-generation agriculture, LNG, hydrogen, fertilizer, and carbon capture businesses, among others. We focus on megatrends such as water scarcity, limited resources, alternative fuels, and energy sustainability to modernize infrastructure, optimize asset use, reduce cost, and mitigate risk. Engineering: Prepares or assists in development of engineering deliverables, including process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, tradeoff studies, and master planning studies Supports multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges Develops as a technical specialist with support from senior process engineers, providing guidance to project teams on water quality and treatment systems Designs a complete project of moderately complex scope within assigned practice areas Performs applied research, including bench, pilot, and full-scale testing to assess treatment processes Develops recommendations for appropriate treatment processes, equipment and materials Oversees data collection, analysis, and management for process design work Prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods Manages assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements Independently applies advanced engineering techniques and analyzes problems Reviews the work of junior engineers and leads process design of projects Demonstrates strong technical writing and communication Develops conceptual-level life cycle costs to evaluate options Coordinates with internal and external teams for project execution Client Focus: Assists in identifying key client interests and drivers for current projects and new business Translates client interests to the project team and develops solutions aligned with client goals Supports business development and pursuit activities, including proposal development and client interviews Presents on applied research and industry trends at conferences People Management: Fosters technical and professional development of junior engineers Participates in mentoring, coaching, and career development planning Engineering Standards: Provides guidance on department design guides, standards, and engineering codes related to water quality and treatment Assists in developing and maintaining engineering standards Provides technical guidance to others on projects and disciplines Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred 8 years of experience in drinking water treatment with at least 4 years in water quality and treatment Knowledge of municipal water treatment design, regulations, and design guides Established leadership skills in consulting, project execution, client service, and business development Strong written and oral communications, with leadership and teamwork abilities Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program Minimum of 5 years related work experience Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records) as applicable Certifications Professional engineering license preferred from the USA or ability to obtain one within 2 years of employment.
