The Surgical First Assistant, as defined by the American College of Surgeons, provides exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal patient outcomes. This role requires advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Certification as a surgical technologist, demonstrating capability in training new colleagues and meeting national standards. Scrubs for cases following sterile procedures, changes into operative attire, dons sterile gown and gloves, and assists the surgeon accordingly. Assists in patient draping, maintaining sterile technique, provides visualization of the operative site, and assists with hemostasis. Passes instruments, sponges, sutures, and supplies as needed, anticipating the surgeon's needs to expedite procedures. Receives and properly handles surgical specimens. Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts as per policy. Cleans the surgical suite following protocols, disposing of biohazardous waste appropriately. Assists with closure of body planes using appropriate techniques. Under surgeon’s direction, may procure in vivo conduits and perform other duties as assigned. Performs additional duties consistent with the role as directed by the surgeon. Requirements include graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program, certification as a first assistant, and maintenance of certification through ongoing education. Candidates must have documented experience with a minimum of 150 surgical cases within a specialty and demonstrate advanced expertise in that area. BLS certification is also required.
