WSP in the U.S. Job Description This Opportunity The Inspectors in the structural steel category should preferably have an associate’s degree in mechanical or structural engineering or physical sciences and a minimum of 5 years of experience in structural steel and other associated inspections, especially metallurgical inspections. Inspectors shall also have current AWS and ASNT certification. Inspectors with American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) audit qualification are preferred. Inspections are also required for other steel materials such as rail, wheels, axles, track materials, brake shoes, nuts & bolts, washers, and other steel materials. For these items, the educational and related experience cited above apply. Additionally, AWS and ASNT certifications, though not required, are preferred. This would be for a position on the Worldwide Technical Inspection & Testing Program for the NYC Transit Authority. International travel is required. Your Impact Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural plans, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, flow diagrams, material sampling, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for field inspection activities. Under minimal supervision, use survey instruments, metering devices, and test equipment to perform basic inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, construction, materials, controls, resources, layout, alignment, and elevation to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, and construction or operating permits. Provide routine technical assistance that accounts for the proper inspection, construction, and functioning of buildings, highways, roads, bridges, structures, infrastructure, equipment, and/or mechanical systems according to design standard specifications. Assist with verifying load calculations, change orders, interpretation of contract plans and specifications, recognizing basic construction, engineering, or survey problems and escalating any differences, errors, or technical problems for appropriate resolution. Attend pre-construction meetings and assist with answering questions from contractors and other attendees. Assist with calculating payments due to contractors for work completed. Assist with ensuring adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects, ensuring that material tests are performed, and materials meet required standards. Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications related to inspection findings using electronic systems, written/oral feedback, photographs, drawings, diagrams, illustrations, spreadsheets, and reports. Comply with client policies and procedures for inspection work under contract. Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, studies and surveys, and construction. Complete training on assigned tasks. Exhibit basic knowledge of current field inspection practices. Work collaboratively with other professionals, scientists, engineers, inspectors, project control, and technicians on assigned inspection phases, checks, and tasks. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications High School Diploma. Minimum of 5 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior construction inspection experience. Valid state driver’s license. Highly familiar with construction inspection principles, field inspection practices, process, methods and techniques. Highly familiar with relevant construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. Sound interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience. Sound self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment. Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives. Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions. Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, spreadsheets, and tools. Ability to provide input and feedback to others in the field such as subcontractors and work colleagues to consistently complete tasks safely, efficiently, and accurately according to specifications. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s Degree in closely related discipline is preferred. Essential professional licensure/certification.
