Responsibilities
Maintain and operate the Physics machine shop and provide technical support for research and teaching to the Department of Physics and other science departments. Machining and testing components of scientific equipment; collaborate with students and faculty to define needs and fabricate parts accordingly in a timely and economical manner. Maintain high quality and safety standards, keep accurate records, and manage shop supplies and equipment. Perform machining to extremely close tolerances using lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other shop equipment. Assist with setting up and performing experiments for research. Meet with researchers to understand needs and define requirements; consult throughout design and fabrication to ensure requirements are met. Assist with instructional equipment and facilities; assist with testing, integration and maintenance of electrical and mechanical assemblies in instructional and research labs (power supplies, computer and electronic components, vacuum pumps, and related equipment). Clean and maintain the machine shop to ensure a safe and orderly work environment. Work Interactions
The department depends on the Experimental Machinist to administer and maintain the machine shop and provide technical support for the department’s research and teaching missions. The EM should efficiently provide design and machining services for the Physics department and laboratories, and for other science laboratories (Chemistry, Biology, Psychology). The candidate will liaise with the cleanroom technical manager to maintain equipment, including pumps and deposition/etching tools, and refurbish department infrastructure to meet evolving teaching and research needs. Qualifications
Use lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other shop equipment with minimal supervision. High school diploma or GED and 5+ years of related work experience. Comprehensive knowledge of machine shop practices (shop safety, feeds and speeds, setup, etc.). Comprehensive understanding of fabrication and assembly techniques; expertise in material selections for custom machined parts. Superior interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences. Proficiency with design software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam, AutoCAD) and data acquisition/instrument control software (e.g., LabVIEW); knowledge of CNC mills, lathes, water jets and other shop tools is desirable for potential upgrades. Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related work experience. Work Mode Designation
