An SMT Process Engineer provides technical expertise and troubleshooting assistance to internal and external customers regarding Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Plated Through Hole (PTH) equipment, processes, and related issues, ensuring optimal machine performance and production quality.
Key Responsibilities
Process Optimization
Collaborate with engineering teams/Customer to optimize SMT processes, including solder paste application, component placement, reflow profiles, and quality control procedures.
Analyze production data to identify trends, potential issues, and areas for improvement.
Develop and implement process improvements to enhance production efficiency and yield.
Technical Support
Respond to technical inquiries from operators, engineers, maintenance personnel and Customer regarding SMT equipment malfunctions, process deviations, and component placement issues.
Assist/Lead diagnosing problems through analysis of error codes, machine logs, and visual inspection, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
Provide remote troubleshooting support via phone, email, and remote access tools.
Conduct on-site troubleshooting and repairs as needed, including adjustments to machine parameters and component placement settings.
Experience
Understanding of electronics or manufacturing processes
Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely
Good communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment
Preferred minimum 2 years of working in a manufacturing or inspection environment
Preferred knowledge of components and their polarity, including resistors and capacitors
Know/Learn topics related to SMT and PTH processing, i.e.
Understand the different processes of SMT, PTH, Hand solder, Touch-up rework of PCBAs Technologies
Be familiar with industry standards such as IPC-A-610, IPC-A-600, IPC 7711/7721, etc.
Know operation of BGA rework equipment
Know operation of X-ray equipment
Understand application of pre-heating table or hot air flow gun when rework is required
Understand use Mini-solder pot
Know the difference between Leaded and Lead-Free processes
Know inspection of PCB to ensure quality standards are met
Skills
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to the degree necessary to perform the job
Proficient at reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, bills of material, etc.
