Overview
Medical Laboratory Technician - Microbiology - Part Time 8 Hour Rotating Shifts (Non-Exempt) (Union) at Keck Medicine of USC, Los Angeles, California. The Tech-Med Lab assists the Clinical Laboratory Scientist by performing routine specimen processing and analysis under direct supervision. The Technician may perform routine automated analysis, instrument checks, calibration, maintenance and quality control; under the direct supervision of a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist on duty. Duties also involve clerical functions such as answering telephone inquiries and communicating with outside clients and reference laboratories utilized by the hospital. Responsibilities
Report directly to the CLS on duty. Perform daily checks and maintenance. Perform a variety of manual, semi-automated and automated Biochemical, Hematological, Microbiological and/or Blood Bank analysis on varied patient specimens, maintaining a high degree of accuracy and productivity. Recognize normal, abnormal and critical results and take appropriate action as required, including considerations for the age of the patient. Demonstrate proficiency in clerical and computer functions, for communicating results and for carrying out additional clinical and clerical duties to meet the needs of the Department. Ensure results are available within defined turnaround time (TAT) guidelines. Communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, guests of the Institution and hospital clinical staff. Participate in the Department’s Quality Assurance Program and continuing education sessions. Help monitor supply levels, communicate with the supervisor for supplies, and assist in monitoring inventory as assigned. Adhere to Safety / Infection Control guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment. Willingness to take on new tasks and additional responsibilities; display flexibility to cover the lab in emergencies and difficult staffing situations. Obtain specimens from designated patients as necessary. Maintain an English-speaking environment in all work areas. Obtain blood samples by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to testing requests, with appropriate consideration for the age of the patient. Receive and screen specimens for acceptability as defined by established guidelines. Process, distribute or package all specimens received (except Blood Bank and Anatomic Pathology samples). Handle inquiries for lab results, specimen status and general information regarding the Department and its functions. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the CLS or supervisor. Adhere to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures. Qualifications
Required: High school or equivalent. Required: 1 year experience in phlebotomy in an Acute Care Facility setting. Required: Organization/time management skills. Required: Excellent customer service behavior. Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications
Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Chemistry (ASCP) certification preferred. Required Licenses/Certifications
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City). If no card at hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date (Required within LA City only). Compensation
The hourly rate range for this position is $26.39 - $44.88.
