Schedule: Monday–Friday between the hours of 6:45am–7:15pm

Status: Full-time, 80 hours/2 weeks

Call requirements: 30 minute call response time

Holiday call rotation split between partners on the team

The Janesville Hospital Operating Room is a diverse team-based OR group that operates as a high-functioning trauma facility. It is staffed 24/7 and offers opportunities for growth across multiple specialties including Cardiac, Orthopedics, Neurology, General, Gynecology, ENT, Plastics, Eyes, Urology, Robotics and Trauma.

Responsibilities

Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during the surgical procedure. Understands the procedure and anticipates the surgeonc needs; maintains the sterile field and ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure.

Assists the surgical team before, during, and after surgery with duties such as checking instruments, supplies, and equipment; scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up the sterile table.

Assists with patient placement and positioning on the table; helps drape sterile fields according to surgeon preference.

Performs counts for sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulator prior to operation and before incision is closed.

Gowns and gloves the surgeon and assistants; maintains the sterile field and highest standard of sterile technique.

Passes instruments to the surgeon; may sponge operative site, hold retractors, cut sutures, and cauterize as directed; prepares sterile dressings and applies them if directed.

Assists other team members with cleaning the operating room and prepping the room for the next patient.

Participates in department performance improvement activities.

Maintains positive relationships with physicians, nurses, and other health care team members to promote collaborative care.

Adapts to the needs and preferences of each physician; communicates updates to Team Lead for staff and preference case cards.

Mentors new employees and student surgical technologists, providing support and feedback during training.

Promotes partner growth by supporting attainment of national certification and assisting partners in obtaining required education.

Completes projects as assigned by Team Lead.

Assists in training of new partners or students and provides constructive feedback during training.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED preferred; graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program required.

Certification: Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA.

Licensure/Training: Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.

Other requirements: Passing Driver's License or Credit Check where applicable; acceptable caregiver and health care worker background checks as required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The work environment is typically moderate noise; occupational exposure category A; PPE is required (eye/face protection, impervious gown, shoe covers, head cover, gloves, lead apron).

Physical demands: frequently use hands; stand and walk; occasionally sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or smell; regularly lift up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds; vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception.
