Overview
The Hammer Museum at UCLA seeks a leader to establish a multidisciplinary platform that advances public programs, community partnerships, and academic initiatives. The role will deepen the museum’s educational mission, expand audience engagement across all ages, and foster on-site, online, and off-site research. The successful candidate will ensure initiatives align with institutional capacity, remain financially sustainable, and support the Hammer’s strategic priorities. The Chief of LER will work with the Director to determine a strategic vision for partnerships, programs, and curricula with students and faculty within the Hammer’s location at UCLA, furthering the museum’s research mission and its role as a civic resource. The position involves piloting experimental programs, testing ideas, and innovating as a core component of an evolving arts organization. Reporting to the Director, the Chief of LER will unify existing teams and leverage expertise with support from the Director of Public Programs and the Associate Director of Academic Programs within a new collaborative hub for LER at the Hammer. The incumbent will cultivate meaningful connections between audiences, artists, and ideas, align the department with the mission, and develop collaborative working methods, manage scope and financial sustainability, and implement efficient workflows. The role includes assessing and mitigating risks related to brand reputation, legal considerations, security, and insurance, and developing proactive solutions aligned with the museum’s mission and operational needs. Through this work, the role will deepen the Hammer’s connection to UCLA and contribute to Los Angeles’s broader cultural landscape. Responsibilities

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. 10+ years experience supporting and fostering a variety of voices, perspectives, and ideas through projects and initiatives aligned with the Museum’s mission (Required). 10+ years strong leadership skills with experience building, managing, and mentoring teams, and supporting a dynamic and inclusive institutional culture (Required). Prior experience with an educational, arts, or cultural organization or equivalent experience in creative development and audience engagement strategies (Preferred). Experience and interest in developing digital audience engagement (Required). Deep understanding of and passion for the Hammer’s mission and belief in art, ideas, creativity, and knowledge-building as engines for positive social change (Required). Ability to advocate for diverse public exchange and mobilize support for divergent ideas (Required). Knowledge of contemporary art and related scholarship, including artists, writers, public intellectuals, and cultural voices (Required). Knowledge of scholarship related to art education and museum practices (Required). Ability to collaborate with artists and colleagues across institutions, academia, and the city to build partnerships and expand impact (Required). Ability to develop meaningful and sustainable programming that fits audience needs and institutional capacities (Required). Strong project management across program planning, administration, and implementation with effective resource deployment (Required). Excellent writing, public speaking, research, and interpersonal skills (Required). Bachelor’s Degree in a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required); Master’s Degree preferred. Background checks: continued employment contingent on satisfactory results; Live Scan is required prior to start.
