Lead Structural Engineer
within the Property & Buildings team in
New York, NY . Your Impact
Apply high-level structural engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation. Perform professional structural engineering work, researching and inspecting proposed and existing site conditions to determine conformance with relevant rules, standards, and permits. Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and updated layout plans with coordination among owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Engage from project inception to completion in design management, construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of building projects. Incorporate advanced technologies, building materials, modeling techniques, and design requirements to ensure safety and functionality; implement future-ready solutions within structural design standards. Coordinate design efforts with engineers, architects, planners, and other professionals across multiple projects, including budgets, tracking hours/expenses, task completion, quantities, calculations, permit support, and construction. Review and approve designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Prepare data visualizations, calculations, cross-sections, and 2D/3D illustrations for interpretation and presentation of data and analyses. Prepare comprehensive structural reports and presentations explaining research, concepts, and recommendations. Analyze data from site investigations and contribute to action plans for risk mitigation (moderate- to high-level). Interact with architects, consultants, and clients professionally; collaborate with engineers and building design professionals on federal/state/local/private projects, including proposals and business development. Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices; uphold ethical standards and WSP’s Code of Conduct. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline. 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in structural design. Professional Engineer license required. Structural Engineer (SE) license required, or ability to demonstrate that licensure can be achieved quickly. Proficiency with structural engineering principles, design/build processes, and application to project work. Experience with building structural planning, design, and construction management across rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects. Working knowledge of sustainability concepts and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Strong knowledge of relevant structural construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping. Ability to perform technical computations and interpret plans and specs. Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of construction and design, applying applicable regulations and policies. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Strong self-leadership, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and mentor junior team members, with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency in technical writing, MS Office, structural software (ETABS or RAM), BIM, and related tools. Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities; ability to apply technical knowledge to data and analyses to reach effective solutions. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP policies. Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond typical workweeks and occasional travel as required. Preferred Qualifications
