The Practice Leader of Transmission Engineering leads an organization that is responsible for executing highly complex projects or multi-project programs while providing superior client satisfaction. This role provides operational oversight and strategic direction, often managing multiple project teams and guiding Project Managers to achieve cohesive, client-centric, large-scale outcomes. The Practice Leader is instrumental in ensuring seamless coordination across stakeholders, balancing competing demands, driving financial performance, and creating a high-performing culture. The role requires leadership, organizational acumen, and the ability to guide the team from inception through delivery. It includes leadership, financial management, business and account development, marketing, coordination, collaboration, mentoring and staff development within the Transmission Engineering Practice. Key Technical Skills Required Extensive knowledge of transmission engineering and transmission line construction principles – 69 kV to 500 kV Proficiency with transmission engineering software tools (PLS-CADD, MFAD, LPILE, etc.) with ability to train others Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE and ANSI Strong foundation design and construction principles Ability to perform independent reviews of work by other engineers (calculations, drawings, transmission line models in PLS-CADD) Experience developing client-specified technical reports related to transmission engineering Experience conducting EMF studies and analysis for transmission lines Knowledge of grid interconnection requirements Experience developing permitting packages for agencies (DOT, DEP, FAA, etc.) Key Responsibilities Leadership and Management Lead a project management and engineering team handling all aspects of transmission projects, including technical staff, subcontractors, and suppliers Provide leadership to Project Managers and staff within the practice Own the business within the practice, focusing on client satisfaction, margins, project health, and cash management Support professional growth of Sr. PMs, PMs and staff; provide technical oversight as needed Develop project scope of work and contracts in alignment with client requirements and industry standards Monitor budgets and expenditures; implement cost-control measures Uphold quality standards and QA processes; ensure adherence to standards and specifications Serve as primary client contact and address inquiries professionally Collaborate with internal stakeholders to drive project success Ensure compliance with contract scope, schedule, and fee/change orders Allocate resources effectively to meet demands Identify and manage project risks; develop mitigation and contingency plans Recruitment, Retention, and Professional Development Lead recruiting and retention efforts within the practice Develop and deliver annual employee performance appraisals Mentor and train staff; provide training on PLS-CADD, MFAD, etc. Mentor Project Managers and Engineers; ensure compliance with policies and QMS Contribute to safety plans and ensure project safety compliance Financial Management and Reporting Develop accurate project cost estimates for proposals Negotiate contract terms, scope and fees Develop project schedules from inception to completion Prepare monthly progress reports and project completion reports Manage project cash flow (WIP/AR) and provide updates to leadership Set up new projects and provide data for performance reviews Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs Business Development and Marketing Drive business development by leveraging existing and new client opportunities Lead project opportunity evaluations and consultant selections Coordinate proposal teams and promote KCI capabilities Travel and participation in industry conferences expected Support project closeout with marketing-ready materials Engage in industry and community organizations Client Relationship Management Develop and maintain client relationships; solicit feedback and identify client needs Contribute to annual business development planning and market research Provide market trends input for strategic planning Compliance and Reporting Adhere to KCI policies and QA/QMS requirements Participate in leadership meetings and regional forums Represent KCI in technical/industry and community organizations Safety and Project Management Develop project-specific safety plans and ensure regulatory compliance Deliver projects on time, within budget, with high quality Monitor use of equipment and personnel; guide project scheduling Qualifications Education and/or Experience Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (AEC) with minimum 7 years of related experience, or 11 years equivalent Progressive PM and organizational management experience Leadership experience building and leading technical teams Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to motivate teams Experience managing budgets, margins, and cash flow Business development experience with client relationship focus Commitment to continuous improvement and excellence Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple priorities Proficiency with relevant software/tools Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations Professional Engineering license in at least one state; ability to license in others as needed Completion of KCI PM Training and Contract Training (or ability to complete within six months) Seniority level: Mid-Senior level Employment type: Full-time Job function: Engineering and Information Technology
