Performs physician-defined routine and specialized ultrasound procedures. Performs complex tasks associated with the operations of ultrasound equipment to produce high quality ultrasound images. The ultrasound technologist is responsible for maintaining a safe ultrasound environment at all times. Responsibilities
Performs procedures or examinations under the order of a licensed medical practitioner for diagnostic interpretation. Ensures the sonography examination order is complete and contains relevant information. Conducts patient clinical assessment. Obtains and documents pertinent clinical information and technical findings for review by physician for order clarification and follow-through. Identifies and documents any limitations to the sonography examination. Reviews examination images, synthesizes examination results, and prepares preliminary findings for physician prior to interpretation. Documents incidental findings that might impact patient safety or care. Demonstrates competency in critical thinking, including addressing age-specific needs of the patient population served. Follows established processes for supply charging, stock maintenance and vendor ordering. Operates an ACR-accredited Ultrasound Department and related equipment to produce high quality images. Selects appropriate equipment and data manipulation to achieve desired results. Is technically proficient in the operation and quality control aspects of scanning and image recording equipment for the assigned area. Identifies and screens patient history, completes and verifies accurate consents as needed. Performs quality imaging procedures through technical expertise of equipment and protocols. Assists physicians with ultrasound procedures when needed and follows Joint Commission procedures regarding medication preparation/usage for minimally invasive procedures. Follows policy regarding time-out prior to minimally invasive procedures. Practices aseptic technique and uses universal precautions; applies infection prevention techniques. Provides patient instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation and minimize anxiety during exams. Positions patient and equipment to optimize imaging while considering safety and comfort. Provides for psychological and physical needs of patients during ultrasound imaging procedures; proficient in patient assessment and monitoring. Adheres to facility policies and procedures, ACR regulations, The Joint Commission standards and other regulatory compliance. Provides patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for Diagnostic Sonography. Assumes responsibility for patient needs during procedures and assists patients, families, practitioners and visitors as needed. Completes required education assignments annually. Proficient in data entry, record maintenance and statistical data and in operation and quality control aspects of scanning equipment. Maintains patient records in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. Stays current in Basic Life Support (BLS) and performs BLS as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the indicated license/certification at the time of obtaining it. Minimum Experience:
Completed an accredited ultrasound program and registry eligible. Licensure Requirement:
Must obtain ultrasound-specific registration within 1 year from date of hire in ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI; state licensure per Tennessee guidelines. Seniority level
