Summary
Assists DCM veterinarians in diagnostic, surgical and preventative procedures and treatments. Observes animals in assigned areas and reports abnormalities, sickness, or injury. Assists with preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care and monitors the condition of assigned animals. Required to participate in afterhours call. Weekend, after hours, and holiday work may be required. Travel between campuses may be required. May be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster. If required to work during a closure, employee must provide accurate and current contact information and is responsible for maintaining communication with supervisor. Failure to report to work when requested by supervisor will result in disciplinary action as outlined by the Staff Handbook. Employee attendance must meet established work schedules. Faithfulness in coming to work, being on time, planning absences in advance when possible, and calling in when unavoidably detained from reporting for work is an essential requirement of the job.

Special Required Ability
For incumbents who have contact or exposure to animals or animal tissues: Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.
Required Background Check, Physical, and Drug Screening
Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
Required Education And/or Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent and four years of experience as an Animal Care Technician OR Graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program and two years of veterinary technician experience OR Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences (i.e. animal science, anthropology, biology, zoology) and four years veterinary technician experience. Specific precautions and/or immunization against potentially hazardous agents are required.
