A Brief Overview Possesses and demonstrates adequate knowledge to provide respiratory care to all patient populations with technique appropriate to chronological, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Respiratory care delivered is ordered by physician according to established standards practice and protocols.

What you will do

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Assesses the physical, psychosocial, spiritual & cultural dimensions of the patient as well as educational needs and appropriately documents.

Performs all respiratory therapy treatments and services, including but not limited to: application, operation, monitoring, and management of all equipment and services provided. Service to include but not limited to: oxygen, mixed gas, and humidity; monitoring; ventilators (invasive and non‑invasive); bronchial hygiene; lung expansion; Spirometry testing; EKG machines; blood gas analysis.

Employs principles of therapeutic communication, interviewing techniques, problem solving and crisis intervention when performing patient care.

Reviews electronic medical records and physician orders throughout the work shift.

Responds, performs, and participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by maintaining the airway, providing oxygen and ventilation via mask, endotracheal tube, or other devices, and performing closed chest cardiac massage.

Facilitates workflow efficiency, monitoring interdepartmental systems and processes, departmental policies and procedures, and making recommendations for improvements as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

Administers drugs per departmental policy and procedure, monitors adverse side effects, and initiates appropriate protocol/response. Utilizes departmental approved protocols.

Maintains ability to perform per departmental standards the following diagnostic/therapeutic modalities: SaO₂ monitoring/trending, apnea monitoring, capnography monitoring/trending, weaning parameters, BIPAP/CPAP, and performs clinical/diagnostic cardiopulmonary skills. Maintains the ability to utilize all departmental ventilators with current modalities.

Selects, reviews, obtains, and performs per departmental standards the following clinical skills: oxygen/aerosol/humidity therapy, IPPB, ultrasonic nebulizer, bronchial hygiene (chest physiotherapy, suctioning), arterial puncture/capillary sticks, and intubation/extubation/airway care.

Attends and participates in all staff meetings and unit rounds. Provides in‑services to represent the department and hospital as required.

Charts and documents initial assessment, daily participant information and progress, and monitors discharge planning activities in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.

Clinically assesses individual responses to treatment plan and properly progresses the individuals to safely obtain established patient/program goals. Communicates and reinforces proper principles of exercise physiology as it relates to progression, overload, and specificity.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree: Graduate of an AMA‑accredited program in respiratory care with an AAS Degree or higher (Required). Bachelor’s degree in related healthcare field (Preferred).

Less than 1‑year acute‑care experience. Registry eligible (Required).

Working knowledge of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology; operational knowledge of respiratory care equipment in a clinical setting; ability to assess hazardous conditions related to respiratory care and take corrective action; ability to work with patients of all ages (neonatal to geriatrics); ability to remain calm and function under stressful conditions; teamwork and communication skills.

RCP – Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner; must maintain license to practice Respiratory Care in Maryland and/or District of Columbia based on hospital location (Required).

CRT – Certified Respiratory Therapist licensed by NBRC (Required).

RRT – Registered Respiratory Therapist registered via NBRC (Preferred).

CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) within 90 days (Required).

Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support, NRP, PALS; required within 1 year (Required).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology; knowledge of operation of respiratory care equipment and its application in a clinical setting; ability to assess hazardous conditions and take corrective action; ability to work with patients of all ages; ability to remain calm and function under stressful conditions; strong teamwork and communication skills.

Hiring Range This position has a hiring range of $35.68 - $64.71
