The job description for the Surgical Technologist incorporates the summary and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse job description and the specific duties listed below. The Surgical Technologist scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team. Prepares and maintains supplies, instruments and equipment related to these procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Medical Hospital. The Surgical Technologist nurse reports to perioperative charge nurse, OR Manager and the Director of Nursing.
Responsibilities:
Checks doctor’s preference cards and case cart supplies to assure that supplies and instruments are correct for the procedure. Assists the circulating nurse in obtaining needed supplies and equipment for each procedure. Assists the circulating nurse in preparing room and equipment for the specific procedure. Opens gown and gloves before scrubbing and assists in opening other supplies prior to each procedure. Is familiar with decontamination and sterilization of needed instruments and has knowledge of performing other types of processing for instruments such as telescopes that cannot be autoclaved, (i.e. Steris, Sterad, etc.). Performs proper hand scrub according to the Hospital’s policy. Performs gowning and gloving within acceptable standards. Sets up sterile field neatly and efficiently and makes certain all requested instruments and supplies are available. Protects sterile field from possible contamination. Keeps track of instruments, sponges, and needles during procedure and performs timely counts in a acceptable manner with the Circulating Nurse. Maintains a neat and orderly mayo tray and back table. Checks instruments to ensure they are in good condition before using. Reports and replaces any faulty instruments and removes same from field. Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants appropriately. Drapes the patient according to surgical procedure unless the surgeon prefers to do it. Moves mayo stand and/or back table to operative field and sets up bovie and suction and any other pertinent equipment. Follows the course of the procedure at all times, anticipating the surgeons needs. Assumes responsibilities for proper handling of specimen, asking surgeon for instructions if necessary, and hands specimen off field to circulating nurse. Informs the circulating nurse of any drains or packing left in a patient. Checks expiration dates, labels all medications on sterile field, and provides surgeon with a description of these immediately prior to use (i.e. name, dose, strength, if applicable). Checks all implants, date of expiration etc. with the circulating nurse and surgeon prior to opening. Applies dressing, removes drapes, and washes prep solution from patient unless otherwise directed by surgeon. Removes gross contamination as possible, contains all soiled instruments in a towel and places all unused instruments in clean tray. Assists in transferring patients from operating table to stretcher. Assists with emptying suction canisters and other liquid waste into hopper. Ascertains proper handling and disposition of specimens with the Circulating Nurse. Removes gown and gloves before leaving the operating room. Assists with the decontamination/re-sterilization process of any instruments that are to be used on the following case. Assists with replacing suction canisters and tubing, and checks for proper functioning. Assists the Circulating Nurse with room turnovers. Decontaminates surgical instruments and equipment using appropriate facility-approved agents. Completes the equipment repair form and reports problem to Perioperative Charge Nurse or D.O.N. when equipment fails. Assists with the distribution of supplies and re-stocking needed areas. Assists with the rotation, receiving, checking outdates, and storage of supplies. Disposes of contaminated needle containers in appropriate receptacles. Assists with preparation of case carts for the next day as assigned. Maintains assigned specialty supply cart by checking par levels weekly and placing appropriate supply orders with materials manager. Supports and participates in Quality Improvement Program. Demonstrates willingness to learn new procedures, equipment or methods as technology advances. Demonstrates ability to use specialized equipment. Assists in central supply area as assigned Maintains confidentiality of acquired information pertaining to patient, employees, physicians and guests of the Hospital. Demonstrates a positive attitude, a good rapport and cooperative working relationship. (TEAMWORK) Return excess supplies and baskets to the appropriate storage areas at the end of the day. Unplug anesthesia lines, suction lines and electrical cords. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications:
High school graduate or equivalent Completion of an appropriate technician program or previous technician experience of at least two years. Certification preferred BLS certification required upon hire. Competent in oral and written communication. Seniority level:
