Overview The Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) Outpatient (OP) Clinical Psychologist will join a growing multidisciplinary team of behavioral health specialists who provide trauma-informed assessment, psychotherapy and assertive case management services to survivors of trauma and violent crime. The program creates a continuum of care for psychological recovery starting at the bedside in Henry Ford Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center with a seamless transition of care to the OP TRC at no cost to survivors. In addition to direct clinical services, the senior clinician will provide clinical supervision, consultation and training to staff and trainees related to trauma-informed evidence-based psychological interventions, and will be involved in program development. Clinical interactions will be primarily in an ambulatory clinic setting, with virtual, home and community visit options.

Typical patient populations served include survivors of interpersonal violence, motor vehicle accidents, sexual assault/domestic violence, industrial accidents, and family members of survivors. The role involves collaborating with the Director of Trauma and Acute Care Surgical Psychology Services to ensure mental health procedures meet trauma survivors’ needs and care standards, and working with the TRC Clinical Program Manager to determine clinic flow, scheduling and staff educational needs.

Responsibilities

Clinical: Conducts clinical intakes for new clients using a trauma-informed approach and identifies service needs. Assessments include presenting problems, psychosocial history, mental status exam, risk assessment and DSM-5 diagnoses.

Clinical interventions include short-term trauma-informed evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention as needed, comprehensive case management, multidisciplinary collaboration with other health care providers, and referral and accompaniment to community services with support from the treatment team.

May visit patients at home or in the community for outreach and follow-up when in-office attendance is not feasible.

Caseloads typically consist of complex clients with histories of trauma exposure (e.g., physical/sexual abuse, interpersonal violence, political trauma, immigration trauma) and may include comorbid physical or psychosocial concerns, including substance use.

Provides consultation to the multidisciplinary treatment team on psychosocial sequelae of trauma, substance use, psychiatric illness and chronic medical concerns.

Utilizes knowledge of mental health, medical, and community resources in Detroit/Wayne County and stays current with new programs.

Develops comprehensive treatment and service plans for each client, integrating knowledge from a wide range of human service resources.

Facilitates coordination of services among agencies and advocates for and links clients to needed services; assists clients in gaining eligibility for Social Security Disability, Crime Victim Compensation, and other resources.

Supervision, Training and Program Development: Provides clinical and administrative supervision to staff and trainees; leads in planning and conducting in-service trainings and case conferences; co-teaches a didactic Trauma Seminar; conducts community presentations on trauma assessment and treatment; collaborates with the Director on program development and innovative care models.

Record Keeping and Other Duties: Maintains client records in line with Michigan, City, County, and System requirements; records data per JCAHO standards; meets program productivity standards; assists with quality improvement requests and data collection for program evaluation; attends staff meetings and trainings; performs other related duties as assigned.

Education Requires a fully licensed, doctoral prepared clinical psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.). Pre-doctoral internship and Doctoral Program must have been APA accredited.

Knowledge And Experience

A minimum of one year experience in an ambulatory care setting preferred (including during training).

Must have training/specialization with trauma-informed care/trauma populations.

Must possess effective writing, communication, and analytical skills.

Research and Program Planning Research Design and Grant Writing Experience is preferred. Programmatic planning experience is preferred.
