Orthopedics, Specialty Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner – Back and Neck Inova Orthopedics seeks a dedicated Specialty Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (APP) to join our Back & Neck specialty team. This outpatient-focused position offers opportunities to work with a collaborative team to address back and neck related orthopedic conditions.

Job Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive evaluations for spine‑related conditions (back/neck pain, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, degenerative disorders).

Obtain detailed histories, perform physical exams and interpret imaging (MRI, CT, X‑ray).

Collaborate with supervising physicians to develop differential diagnoses and individualized treatment plans.

Initiate and manage non‑operative care, including PT referrals, medication management and spinal/joint injections.

Assist in surgical procedures (patient positioning, prep, first or second assist in the OR).

Manage pre‑operative and post‑operative care: wound assessments, dressing changes and suture/staple removal.

Educate patients and families on spine anatomy, treatment options, recovery expectations and long‑term care.

Coordinate care transitions between inpatient and outpatient settings.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (PTs, radiologists, pain management specialists).

Document all encounters, assessments and procedures accurately and promptly in the EMR.

Ensure adherence to hospital protocols, state regulations and scope‑of‑practice requirements.

Serve as the key point of contact for patient questions throughout the care continuum.

Provide emotional support for patients undergoing complex or chronic spine treatment.

Maintain current knowledge of clinical best practices, spine care advances and surgical techniques through ongoing education and CME.

Participate in team meetings, clinical case reviews and quality improvement initiatives.

Additional Requirements

Work schedule: Full‑time.

Education: Graduate of an accredited NP or PA program.

Certification: Board‑certified (ACNP or NCCPA). BLS, Virginia license, DEA required.
