Overview
Under the direction of the Director or designee, provides leadership and technical expertise, coordinates workflow, manages staff scheduling and payroll functions, and performs training and quality activities. Ensures that testing is completed in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with regulatory guidelines and organizational policies and procedures. Has responsibility for oversight of staff. Performs the essential functions of the Medical Technologist.
Primary shift will be afternoon hours starting at 2:00 pm through 10:30 pm. Flexibility is expected. May include occasional weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities
Supervises the employees of assigned area ensuring efficiency of workflow and continuity of services
Ensures completion of employee departmental orientation, competency testing, compliance training and other mandatory instructions
Ensures efficiency and productivity by monitoring the production status and directing the workflow and people resources to meet deadlines and standards
Provides oversight and supervision of Lab Assistants, Lab Technicians, Medical Technologists and Med Tech Leads
Participates in validations, projects and monitoring key performance indicators
Provides leadership and technical expertise for the department helping to resolve issues associated with protocol, equipment, interpretation of test results and system interfaces
Ensures that all QC/QA procedures, maintenance schedules, instrument calibration and function checks and other regulatory inspection agency requirements are followed
Participates in the ongoing monitoring for each testing process to identify errors or potential problems leading to errors and takes effective and preventive corrective actions when indicated
Performs Medical Technologist bench work as needed
Participates in an on-call rotation
Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, biological science or related field from an accredited college or university. Three or more years in a clinical laboratory, preferably blood banking environment including one or more years' experience in supervision and management experience or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations and Designations:
Valid and current Florida Technologist license in Immunohematology or Blood Banking, supervisor license preferred. In certain specialty laboratories performing HLA, molecular testing or patient testing, other Florida licenses may be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to read technical procedures and governmental regulations
Ability to organize work for timely completion
Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Ability to read, write and speak English effectively
Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Skill in operating office equipment
Basic computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
Ability to travel up to 10% of the time
Ability to commute with personal transportation
Ability to report to work during a disaster, public health emergency or other catastrophic event

Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 20 pounds).

Functions are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as inclement weather, atmospheric elements and pathogenic substances.
