Position Summary Reporting to the Administrative Director and the Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technician assists surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. The role performs similar duties in other hospital areas as assigned, ensuring a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and families. The technician demonstrates knowledge of asepsis, sterile technique, and operating room sanitation while supporting the surgical team’s efficiency and patient safety.

Responsibilities

Performs in-room surgical scrub duties, patient positioning, draping, and sterile instrument and supplies set-up.

Assists in the preparation of surgical procedures by anticipating physician needs and safely operating electrosurgical equipment and diagnostic tools.

Maintains a safe therapeutic environment, uses patient restraints appropriately, and works efficiently with physicians and RN’s across surgical procedures.

Demonstrates an understanding of asepsis principles, consistently maintains sterile technique, and applies universal precautions.

Ensures all necessary equipment is prepared in the room prior to case start, including positioning devices, Foley, and supplies.

Performs surgical scrub according to departmental policies, monitors skin integrity, and communicates to circulating RN when issues arise.

Assists in patient positioning, maintains patient safety, and maintains work area and equipment per department standards.

Adheres to required certifications: CPR, OR Technician, and maintains technical skill level for evolving surgical techniques.

Monitors for and calls attention to breaks in technique, assists in sponge, needle, and instrument counts, and participates in staff meetings and services.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

High School graduate or equivalent.

Minimum Work Experience:

Effective verbal and written communication skills; one year recent experience in an acute care setting preferred; one year recent experience in OR/OB preferred.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration:

American Heart Association BLS Card; certification from an approved Surgery Technician School; current Los Angeles County Fire Card (obtain within 30 days of employment); Assault Response Competency (ARC) required within 30 days of hire.
