Responsibilities

Performs patient care responsibilities considering age-specific standards of care for adult and geriatric patients.

Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including adult, geriatric and general patient populations.

Provides patient care that meets the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient within the CNA's scope of practice.

Assists with patient admissions, discharges and transfers.

Assists with activities of daily living, including bathroom assistance, shower, dressing, changes bed linen, cleaning over-bed table and bedside stand, and maintaining the room/bay as needed throughout the shift.

Assists with transporting patients to and from the Holding Room/Operating Room and turns over the patient bay in a quick and efficient manner.

Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, using equipment, assisting with bedpan, commode, and ambulation.

Prepares patients for meals; serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary.

Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.

Answers patients' call lights, anticipates patients' needs and makes rounds of assigned patients.

Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.

Demonstrates the ability to perform procedures within the CNA's scope of practice per state law.

As requested, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure and intake/output.

Reports patient complaint of pain to the assigned RN.

Observes patients' mental and physical conditions as appropriate to scope of practice, reports any changes to supervising RN.

Knowledgeable of and applies appropriate infection control procedures.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Communicates clearly and concisely with RNs and medical staff.

Maintains good working relationships within the department and with other departments.

Documentation meets current standards and policies.

Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures and developmental skills, etc.

Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.

Demonstrates flexibility, organization and the ability to function under stressful situations.

Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Customer service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.

Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor and presents a professional appearance toward all internal and external customers at all times.

Consistently initiates interactions to assist individuals who may not be direct customers, such as guiding patients who appear lost.

Takes appropriate action to recover from service difficulties and resolves customer problems promptly.

Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, maintaining a pleasant and professional environment and fostering calmness during stressful situations.

Interacts with supervisory personnel in a professional, supportive and courteous manner, venting emotions appropriate to time and place.

Demonstrates a commitment to service by consistent attendance and punctuality; schedules absences according to departmental requirements and incurs unplanned absences only when unavoidable.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

Completion of CNA course.

Current CNA certification in the state of Maine.

Listing on the Maine State Board of Nursing CNA Registry.

Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required. Must be obtained within six months of hire.

Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.

Additional languages preferred.

Basic computer knowledge.

Ability to engage patients and team members utilizing the CMH Experience Standards, including fostering a warm, caring, non-judgmental environment; active listening; honesty and consistency; respect and dignity; teamwork; resilience and adaptability.

Demonstrated ability to direct and triage in a highly fluid dynamic operational environment.

Ability to collaborate with all levels of management/administration.
