Overview The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Police Service (PS) seeks a Police Officer to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities. The mission of the Police Service is to serve and safeguard all individuals on VA controlled property and to ensure the safety and order of VA facilities.
Duties
Protect the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property;
Prevent, detect, and investigate crimes;
Patrol assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle;
Subdue persons causing disturbance or who threaten harm to themselves or others;
Follow rules and procedures concerning search and seizure of evidence and contraband;
Obtain search and arrest warrants;
Arrest violators;
Provide basic first aid and CPR prior to arrival of emergency medical personnel;
Prepare report of activities and events that occurred during shift;
Perform traffic control;
Assist citizens in emergency situations;
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule Compressed/Flexible Schedule. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours, and extended hours as required. Candidates must also be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services or locations, if necessary.
Physical Requirements The work requires substantial and strenuous physical exertion such as running, climbing multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. Stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and strength are essential to pursue, apprehend, and detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, or armed.
Requirements
U.S. citizenship;
Completion of all required application steps, including an online assessment measuring critical general competencies required for the job;
Subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment; refusal results in denial of employment;
Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959;
Background and security investigation;
Pre‑placement physical examination;
Valid, unrestricted state driver's license (Real ID compliant, if applicable);
Seasonal influenza vaccination program participation for all VA health care personnel;
1‑year probationary period during which performance, conduct, agency needs, and public interest are evaluated; continued employment is contingent upon a written certification that the employee advances the public interest.
Qualifications
Eligibility to be considered based on required experience, education, or combination as of the closing date (10/22/2025);
GS‑05 Requirements:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑4 level in federal service, or
Education: 4‑year bachelor’s degree in Police Science or a comparable field with documented transcripts;
Combination: Completion of a federal, state, or local police academy with ≥40 classroom hours and at least 9 months of specialized experience.
GS‑06 Requirements:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑5 level, with no educational substitution; experience must be fully documented with job title, duties, dates, and hours per week.
Driver’s license and successful firearms qualification and maintenance as required for VA police officers;
Completion of an 8‑week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, is mandatory for new officers;
Ability to possess firearms under applicable federal laws and VA policy.
