Overview The Senior Research Assistant will independently maintain cell lines and reagents, perform transfections, PCR, western blotting, and extractions of RNA, DNA and protein. The individual will prepare equipment and supplies so that experiments can be carried out successfully in the laboratory. They will maintain lab order and independently perform experiments in collaboration with computational biologists and other lab members. The Senior Research Assistant will collect, record, and interpret experimental data and contribute to the writing of grants and manuscripts in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. This position will supervise and assist students, post-docs and other research assistants in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

Maintain cell lines and reagents; perform transfections, PCR, western blotting, and nucleic acid/protein extractions (RNA, DNA and protein).

Prepare equipment and supplies to ensure smooth execution of laboratory experiments.

Maintain lab organization and collaborate with computational biologists and other lab members.

Collect, record, and interpret experimental data; contribute to grant and manuscript writing with the Principal Investigator.

Supervise and assist students, post-docs, and other research staff in the laboratory.

About the Laboratory The Fairbrother Laboratory combines computational biology with high-throughput genomics to identify functional elements in the genome and to understand recognition events important in gene expression and processing (transcription and RNA splicing). Projects include: 1) analyzing how sequence element arrangements are read by the splicing machinery, 2) identifying mutations/polymorphisms that disrupt splicing in the human population.

Additional Responsibilities and Core Facility Support This position will also support the NIH COBRE funded RNome Facility Core by helping to ensure core operations through reagent and supply management, genomic assays, long-read Nanopore sequencing, functional genomics, RNA IP, RNA probe synthesis, and Massively Parallel Reporter Assays (MPRAs).

Term and Location This is a fixed-term position with an end date one year from the date of hire, which may be extended based on available funding. Location: Onsite.

Job Qualifications Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with 3–5 years of laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of molecular, cellular biology and biochemistry techniques. Competence in basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, electrophoresis, western blotting) and in growing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures.

Preferred: Experience in RNA/DNA purification and analysis, next-generation sequencing, biochemistry, or cellular imaging.
