Overview West Virginia University Health System (SMG) seeks an Advanced Practice Provider in Emergency Medicine. Summersville, WV offers a community with a lower cost of living and access to outdoor activities.

Position Summary The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills for the comprehensive management of emergency medicine patients, coordinating involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams, directing care, performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, and coordinating discharge planning/follow-up as applicable. The APP participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students and provides healthcare services consistent with state law and licensure requirements. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Manages comprehensive and individualized care for emergency medicine patients and their families in the DEM and post-discharge in the ambulatory setting; coordinates hospitalization if necessary.

Completes pre-procedure evaluations and integrated assessments.

Orders additional tests or consults as appropriate, following established guidelines and protocols.

Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests within scope of practice.

Consults with DEM clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.

Performs concise clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record.

Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating necessary services and tests for outpatient follow-up.

Develops a comprehensive, individualized plan of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.

Demonstrates expertise across the age continuum; identifies unstable or complex situations and initiates appropriate interventions.

Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.

Evaluates patients and coordinates follow-up procedures in ambulatory or inpatient settings.

Contributes to outcome measures collection and participates in education and program development.

Promotes learning, updates knowledge base, and collaborates with staff to improve patient outcomes.

Assists in data collection for outcomes and participates in clinical trials as applicable.

Other duties/projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing.

National Certification by a recognized APRN Certification Center.

Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.

American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certification required.

Experience: Acute care or emergency medicine preferred; eligible new graduates will be considered.

Preferred NP Qualifications

ACNP or FNP considered.

American Heart Association PALS certification encouraged.

Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant (PA)

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant; Graduate of an ARC-PA approved PA program.

Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.

Licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

Education, Certification, and Licensure (General)
