Work Schedule/Requirements

40-hour work week; topically varies by assignment. The Police Trainee employment process is multi-step and requires passing each step in sequence. Failure to attend scheduled appointments (without verified emergency) may withdraw an applicant from consideration. Applicants must be in excellent health and able to perform duties safely. No residency requirement to apply for Police Officer; upon acceptance to the police academy, applicants must be residents of North Carolina. Qualified applicants are scheduled for hiring consideration periodically throughout the year. Recruit training is a 25-week program covering law, human relations, first aid, firearms, driver training, defensive tactics, and modern law enforcement techniques, with daily physical activity. Trainees must complete all topical areas and the State Comprehensive Examination. Sworn status is conferred after successful completion of the Greensboro Police Department Academy and the State Examination. New officers then receive 12 weeks of field training and are assigned to one of four districts in the Patrol Bureau. High school diploma or GED No felony or serious misdemeanor conviction Physically capable of performing the duties United States citizen Valid North Carolina driver’s license prior to start of the Police Academy Must be 20 years old prior to completion of the Police Academy Pass physical, drug, psychological, and polygraph examinations if offered conditional employment Vision: corrected 20/20; uncorrected 20/100 but correctable to 20/20; color vision acceptable Hearing: no disqualifying cumulative loss; hearing aids not acceptable POPAT test required to predict academy success Reading level of 10th grade or higher Special Notes Concerning This Position

Selected applicants will take a reading comprehension test; must meet 10th-grade reading level NC CJET Standards require minimum standards for certification; agencies may require higher standards Documentation of Criminal Charges: Applicants must list ALL charges on the Personal History Statement, with true/certified copies of dispositions. Failure to disclose may result in denial of certification or suspension/revocation of existing certification.
