Overview
Officer positions qualify for an additional $2,484.15 in holiday pay. Applicants who have successfully completed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) are preferred. Applicants who are currently enrolled in BLET or who plan to enroll in BLET in the near future may also apply. Sworn law enforcement agents, officers and deputies from other states are encouraged to apply. Hickory, North Carolina, is a three-time All-America City on the Catawba River, approximately one hour east of Asheville and one hour north of Charlotte. Patrol assigned areas (on foot or in patrol car) to preserve general order; direct traffic and enforce laws; operate speed detection devices (radar); perform other police-related duties as required. Respond to calls, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons, and public service duties. Conduct preliminary inquiries, field interviews, and follow-up investigations; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; gather information and evidence; secure crime scenes. Obtain and serve search and criminal warrants; apprehend and process offenders, including juveniles. Provide assistance and backup to other officers; administer first aid to victims and assist motorists. Provide traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, ball games, and school crossings. Testify in judicial proceedings; complete required reports and forms (accident and incident reports); serve criminal papers. Transport prisoners; inspect and maintain patrol vehicles; perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Must possess a NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with high school completion or equivalent. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid NC driver’s license (Class C) for the type of vehicle operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission. Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, juvenile law, search and seizure laws, city ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures. Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques; knowledge of the city’s geographical layout; knowledge of first aid; knowledge of the court system and procedures. Skills in oral and written communication; skills in the use of firearms, communications equipment, and other standard and specialized equipment; skills in the use of photographic and surveillance equipment, audio/video equipment, radios, and various emergency equipment; skills in restraining persons without causing physical harm. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands, stoop, kneel, squat, crouch, crawl, talk and hear; must pass the North Carolina Police Officer Physical Ability Test. SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position is safety-sensitive and the employee will be part of a random drug testing pool. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outside with possible exposure to cold or inclement weather, infectious diseases, and life-threatening situations. Benefits
