Overview
Position: CHIEF CURATOR, MORIKAMI M Museum Salary: $74,624 Annually, negotiable depending on qualifications Department: Parks and Recreation/Special Facilities Administration Location: 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach Hours: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday – Friday, including various nights, weekends and holidays. Palm Beach County’s Parks and Recreation Department seeks an experienced museum professional passionate about Japanese history, culture, and art as Chief Museum Curator for Morikami Museum. This position oversees all aspects of museum and garden operations, champions education programming, and provides expert leadership in collections management and exhibits. Key Responsibilities
Museum Leadership & Representation: Serve as spokesperson for the museum at functions, conferences, and with media; attend meetings countywide and coordinate with museum staff, trustees, agencies, contractors, and the public.
Collections & Exhibit Management: Oversee permanent collections, acquisitions, de-accessioning, loans, and record-keeping; ensure compliance with museum, department, and county policies and professional accreditation standards; oversee restoration, registration, and conservation of artifacts, exhibits, and garden collections.
Administrative, Budgetary & Grant Operations: Prepare and administer museum budgets, grants, and reports; supervise staff and museum volunteers.
Educational Programming & Community Engagement: Supervise all educational programming, exhibits, and garden activities; provide expertise and act as the subject authority for museum and gardens; maintain knowledge of Japanese history, language, and culture.
Professional Development & Research: Contribute to development of museum publications and professional journals; research and propose new exhibitions, programs, and collaborations.
Qualifications This position requires qualified applicants to possess one of the following:
A Bachelor’s Degree in the Arts, Social Sciences or Museum Studies; minimum of five (5) years of experience in professional museum work, or
An unrelated Bachelor’s Degree; minimum of seven (7) years of experience in professional museum work, or
An Associate’s Degree in the Arts, Social Sciences or Museum Studies; minimum of seven (7) years of experience in professional museum work, or
Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification; minimum of nine (9) years of experience in professional museum work.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include:
Master’s Degree in Museum Science
Recent professional or curatorial experience with Japanese history, language and culture
Recent experience in the administration or management of an American Alliance of Museums (AAM) accredited museum
Experience managing a staff of 10 or more employees
Management experience in a museum with a budget of three million dollars or greater
