Overview As a Research Scientist, you will lead research projects on Alaska-themed issues, utilize advanced analytical equipment, and work as part of a dynamic team in a supportive environment with a flexible schedule.

The Department of Chemistry at UAA is recruiting for a full-time Research Scientist in Environmental Toxicology. This position will lead a portfolio of research projects as assigned by the project Principal Investigator, involving environmental pollutants and health impacts, such as harmful algal blooms, microplastics, and refined fuel spills. Work will be performed at the Applied Science Engineering and Technology (ASET) Laboratory, a modern analytical chemistry facility in Anchorage, Alaska. The position focuses on leading research projects in environmental and biomedical science, and providing student training. This position is supervised by the project Principal Investigator. Most analytical work will involve techniques such as high resolution LC/MS, ICP-MS, NMR, TOC, GC/MS, laser ablation, solvent evaporator, centrifuge, lyophilizer, and other automated equipment.

Responsibilities

Lead a portfolio of environmental toxicology research projects as assigned by the project Principal Investigator.

Perform analyses using high-end equipment (LC/MS, ICP-MS, NMR, GC/MS, TOC, laser ablation, etc.).

Provide student training and contribute to interdisciplinary Arctic-themed research.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a physical, natural, or life science field such as Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedicine, Geology, Geochemistry, Physics, or a related field.

Evidence of experience operating analytical chemistry equipment, bench chemistry skills, leading research projects, and strong interpersonal communication abilities.

Two years of experience in a relevant field. Prior experience operating LC/MS and other mass spectrometry systems is welcome. Project leadership experience.

Position Details This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a full-time, exempt staff position with a competitive salary and a full employee benefits package, including retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
