Join Banner Health as a fully remote Facility Inpatient Complex Senior Coder. Applicants must live in the following states: AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WY.
Position Summary This role provides coding and abstracting for high‑tiered complexity acute care services across all Banner hospitals. Responsibilities include reviewing inpatient records, assigning ICD‑CM, PCS, MS‑DRG, APR‑DRG and POA codes, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and AHIMA standards. The coder serves as a subject‑matter expert and mentor for less experienced team members.
Core Functions
Analyze medical information from records and accurately code diagnostic and procedural information according to national coding guidelines.
Collaborate with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information.
Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes, and other pertinent information, ensuring complete records.
Provide coding quality assurance and address complex coding matters independently.
Act as a knowledge resource, mentor staff, and collaborate with Acute Care Coding Leaders and Education teams.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of inpatient coding experience in acute care.
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), RHIT, RHIA, or another active AHIMA or AAPC certification.
Strong PCS coding experience and ability to code a wide range of complex charts.
Currently certified through AAPC or AHIMA. A coding assessment will be administered after a successful interview.
Proficiency in remote work tools, coding software, and abstracting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Experience in a large, multi‑system healthcare organization.
