Counselor I
role at MGA (Middle Georgia State University) located in Macon, GA. This full-time, 12-month exempt position supports students’ personal and educational needs through counseling, outreach, and collaboration with university staff and resources. Responsibilities
Counseling (65%)
- Provides ongoing individual and group counseling, conducts initial assessments, manages client cases, treatment planning, and documentation in accordance with center policy. Confidentiality/Record Keeping/ Administrative Duties (20%)
- Maintains confidential records per privacy laws (HIPAA) and has working knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR); assists in policy development and participates in university committees or task forces; serves on the Assessment & Care Team; identifies as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Campus and Community Duties (10%)
- Provides referrals, outreach, and consultative services; develops and delivers workshops on mental health topics; participates in trainings for faculty, staff, and students. Crisis Management (5%)
- Provides crisis intervention, including same-day emergency appointments for students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Graduate Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology. Other Required Qualifications
- Must be Associate Licensed to practice in Georgia (LAPC, LMSW); must be under clinical supervision and actively pursuing clinical hours toward licensure. Required Experience
- Typically 1–2 years of relevant experience or equivalent apprenticeship/internship. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of counseling principles in higher education; knowledge of federal and state laws related to counseling services (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.); experience with short-term therapy, case management, crisis intervention, and group counseling; strong communication and interpersonal skills; computer/software proficiency.
