The

Department of Parks and Recreation

is looking for two (2) tree-loving and hardworking individuals to be part of their team as a

Tree Trimmer-Heavy Truck Driver!

Join us in nurturing trees, enhancing natural beauty, and creating safe, flourishing spaces for everyone to enjoy!

Duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

Pruning trees and branches, trimming or removing palms and fronds for public safety, tree health, and aesthetic purposes using pruning tools like chain saws and pole pruners, performing remedial and preventative pruning, cleaning up debris, loading it onto a truck, and using required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with industry standards; Operating a 25,950 GVW or larger dump truck, boom truck, bucket truck, stump grinder, industrial brush chipper, and other vehicles and equipment for tree maintenance and removal operations, including hauling debris to disposal sites; Exercising courteous and tactful public relations on the job site by handling complaints regarding noise from power saws, debris from tree pruning, and equipment movement, assisting in sealing off work areas with traffic signs and safety devices, requesting the towing of illegally parked vehicles for safe tree pruning, directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic for safety, and politely answering or directing all pertinent inquiries related to the assignment; Maintaining chain saws and assisting in the maintenance of other tree pruning equipment, performing daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the assigned truck, reporting any malfunctions or defects to the supervisor, cleaning as necessary, and ensuring the daily safekeeping of assigned chainsaws and equipment by removing them from vehicles and locking them up in the warehouse locker; Responding to emergency call-out work during non-working hours after work, on weekends, and holidays; Reporting all accidents, investigations, injuries, equipment breakdowns, and unsafe practices, participating in in-service training and temporary assignment duties, and timely reporting any citations, convictions, or license suspensions or revocations as required by Chapter 286, Hawaii Revised Statutes, for commercial driver’s license holders; and Performing other related duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions: Work schedule is from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with varying days off depending on work needs. This position requires responding to emergency work, which may be performed in inclement or extreme weather conditions, under or near fallen trees, and in areas with poor visibility due to traffic. Duties may include securing areas with electric lines downed by trees and working in off-road conditions. Employees may be required to work o vertime, weekend, night, after hours and holiday work based on operational needs. This position will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

Experience Requirement

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas, including the trimming, pruning and care of trees and shrubs, and some truck driving.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of proper tree trimming techniques and practices; common tree diseases and infestations; the use of appropriate insecticides, fungicides and fertilizers; and demonstrated the ability to climb trees with or without spikes; diagnose and treat conditions harmful to trees; and operate heavy trucks.

License/Certificate Requirements

The following license and certificates are required for the job at the time indicated:

Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B Current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate

Verification Requirement: You must submit a copy of your CDL Class B or higher as well as your current State Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate in order to be given credit.

Prior To Completion Of Probation

Current Certified Arborist or Tree Worker (International Society of Arboriculture) certificate. Obtain and maintain current First Aid/CPR and AED certificates. Obtain Forklift Certification.
