Overview
Punjabi In-Person Interpreter (IPI) at Universal Language Service, Inc. Location: Bellingham, onsite servicing Whatcom County. Job Type: Independent Contractor. The Punjabi In-Person Interpreter is responsible for facilitating onsite communication for Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients and the practitioners that serve them in a variety of settings. This contract position is flexible and provides opportunities to expand your interpreting business with access to many sessions per day.
Responsibilities
Provide effective onsite interpreting sessions in a professional manner.
Maintain professional appearance and behavior, including punctuality and preparedness for sessions.
Adapt quickly to new and changing situations.
Adhere to interpreter ethical standards and procedural requirements specific to interpreting context.
Commit to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.
Respect LEP clients’ culture, dialect, beliefs and preferences.
Demonstrate strong customer service and interpreting skills.
Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation and enunciation.
Render exact concepts and meanings according to interpreter protocol.
Qualifications
Fluent in Punjabi and English with strong verbal communication skills (source and target language).
Excellent listening and retention skills to maintain accuracy during interpretation.
Successful completion of a proficiency assessment or national certification.
Knowledge of code of ethics and standards of practice (IMIA, NBCMI and NCIHC).
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to read and write in Punjabi and English.
Degree or certifications in interpreting practices.
National Medical Interpreter Certification by CCHI, NBCMI or DSHS.
40-hour accredited medical interpreting courses (e.g., ALTA, Bridging the Gap, MiTio, etc.).
