Adult ESL Plus Substitute Instructor
POSITION SUMMARY :
Framingham Adult ESL Plus is a part-time, grant-funded program that offers classes at no cost to adult learners in the Metrowest area. The program offers morning and evening classes in English as a Second Language, High School Equivalency, and Citizenship. In the absence of the scheduled classroom teacher, the substitute teacher provides instruction, encourages student progress, and manages the learning environment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Teaching certification is preferred.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: At least an Associate's Degree in the area of major study. Experience/training with students at this grade level; experience/training with non-native speakers; and experience/training working with adult learners. SKILLS AND ABILITY: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups including staff and the general public. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage several projects simultaneously. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, state and federal laws, and Framingham Public Schools policies. Work with students of diverse backgrounds with diverse needs in an equitable and inclusive manner. Maintain appropriate confidential records. React professionally and objectively to unpredictable situations. Operate a computer and related software including but not limited to Google. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Implement existing lesson plans in a manner that ensures the integrity of academic time and motivates students to learn and participate. Collect and correct students’ papers and assignments according to the lesson plan. Collect attendance and student work to return to regular teacher. Instruct students regarding a variety of classroom topics and courses of instruction. Address the various learning styles of students accordingly. Model correct use of spoken and written English language. Demonstrate professional practices in teaching. Implement all program protocols and procedures as appropriate. For long-term assignments, you may be required to develop lesson plans, create, administer, and grade tests/assignments, and attend school-related functions. PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about and may be required to traverse occasionally throughout the school building. The employee must also often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is expected to lift at least 20 lbs (i.e., books, school supplies, etc.). The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand strength to grasp tools. Occasionally s/he operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). The employee must be able to input information into a computer and read material from a computer monitor as well as handwritten or printed matter with or without visual aids. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members in person and on the telephone. In the classroom, the employee must be able to see and hear on a continuous basis in order to ensure the safety of students as well as speak frequently to provide instruction. On rare occasions, it may be necessary to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces. The employee will be working in a normal school environment with an acceptable level of noise. REPORTS TO: Director of Adult ESL Plus SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None. FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as Non-Exempt. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Covered under Framingham School Committee Policy. This is a grant-funded position and as such is dependent upon the availability of grant funds. Instructors are hired for one semester with the possibility of renewal.
