Instructor, Cooking – Adjunct (Full Time/Part Time)
Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field.
General Responsibilities Under general supervision, this individual will provide quality instruction to prepare and teach students the necessary skills in basic cooking. The community education program consists of a wide variety of personal enrichment classes and special programs designed to meet a multiplicity of life‑long learning educational needs within the community.
Duties / Functions
Teaching and Course Preparation
Develop learner‑centered lesson plans.
Employ teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles.
Incorporate current technology in classroom, distance learning, and laboratory environments.
Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi and supplementary materials.
Conduct appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes.
Professional Development
Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field; maintain current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation.
Participate in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.
Administration
Maintain classroom and laboratory spaces, including upkeep of assigned equipment.
Ensure the security of facilities, equipment, and instructional materials, maintaining safe working conditions.
Maintain student records (grades, attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using technology‑based programs.
Ensure compliance with all applicable college, state, and federal rules and regulations.
Student Support
Address student concerns in a timely manner.
Promote retention and persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success.
Refer students to campus and community resources as appropriate.
Demonstrate and model the college’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education Requirements
Required:
High School Diploma or GED graduate.
Preferred:
Associate Degree or higher from a regionally accredited post‑secondary institution; Certification from the American Culinary Federation.
Experience Requirements
Required:
Two years’ experience in food preparation within the culinary/food service industry; Teaching and/or industry training in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars.
Preferred:
Greater than two years’ experience in food preparation within the culinary/food service industry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) Required
Excellent organization skills.
Good communication and people skills.
A high level of attention to detail and creative mindset.
Knowledgeable of the culinary and hospitality industry.
