Overview

Corrections professionals in Vermont work in a system that believes in the basics of human change. Intensive training prepares entry-level Correctional Officers for a career that blends security work, human services, and leadership opportunities. This work is rewarding on many levels and requires a wide range of skills. Many permanent positions are filled by promoting temporary employees, so external candidates are encouraged to apply for both temporary and permanent openings. Training

Your correctional career begins with a week at the correctional facility observing the duties of a correctional officer, followed by six weeks of instruction at the Vermont Correctional Academy. After graduation, you will undergo eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your facility. The start date depends on your availability. Positions operate on a 2-shift schedule (6am - 6pm and 6pm - 6am), with shifts assigned by seniority and facility needs. Work Schedule and Benefits

We introduce the innovative 2-2-3 schedule to improve work-life balance. This rotation involves working two days, two days off, then three days, repeating every two weeks. It provides predictable hours, longer stretches of rest, and a 3-day weekend biweekly. Work just 7 out of every 14 days, instead of 10 in a traditional schedule. Enjoy regular days off, reducing long stretches without a break. Work balanced day or night shifts to prioritize well-being. Plan personal life with a clear four-week rotation cycle. Work fewer days annually (about 180 days), leaving more time for personal pursuits. All employees adhere to key practices: customer service, holistic service, strength-based relationships, and results orientation. Equal Opportunity Employment

The Vermont Department of Corrections is committed to diversity and equitable hiring. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, disability, or other protected characteristics. We encourage women, minorities, bilingual/bicultural individuals, LGBTQ+ persons, and people with disabilities to apply. Who May Apply
