Overview / Main Purpose A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Plumbing is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of incarcerated individuals in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.
Responsibilities
Perform maintenance and repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure in a correctional facility environment.
Supervise incarcerated individuals assigned to work details; maintain control and discipline; conduct searches for contraband; administer disciplinary actions as needed; enforce safety, sanitary, custody and security rules.
Train and instruct incarcerated individuals on methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
Inspect and approve/disapprove all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
Estimate time, materials and supplies for assigned tasks; order supplies; maintain records of usage and inventories.
Personally perform installation, maintenance or repair tasks on plumbing systems; operate hand and power tools; document time and materials used.
Escort third-party vendors and inspect completed work assignments.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Experience: Two years of plumbing experience.
Notes: The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. If so, they must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in Maryland prior to permanent appointment.
Some positions may require the appropriate Maryland driver’s license to operate motor vehicles for the transportation of incarcerated individuals or supplies.
Employees who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.
Special Requirements Selection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status; Must be at least 21 years of age; A completed background investigation; Oral interview; Physical examination. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
Selection Process Becoming a Correctional Maintenance Officer requires that a recruit completes the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), at one of our regional locations throughout the state of Maryland. Upon successful graduation from the Academy, individuals will be assigned to facilities throughout the state of Maryland. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of Maryland. Please indicate on your application all the counties in the state of Maryland where you are willing to accept employment. Candidates will remain on the certified eligible list for a period of two years. Please make sure that you provide sufficient information on your application to show that you meet the qualifications for this recruitment. All information concerning your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date. We will not consider information submitted after this date. Successful candidates placed on the eligible (employment) list for at least one year.
