Program Overview The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a continental‑scale observation facility funded by the National Science Foundation and operated by Battelle. NEON collects long‑term ecological data across a variety of ecosystems.
Job Summary Lead Seasonal Field Technician, onsite in Boulder, CO. Start March/April 2026, end November 2026. Lead seasonal and periodic sampling of physical, chemical, and biological data across multiple field sites. May perform sampling in botany, soils, entomology, mammalogy, limnology, or instrumentation; or serve as a generalist.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Walking, hiking, prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 40 lb. Exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, rough terrain, high altitude (>5 000 ft), toxic plants (e.g., poison ivy), insects, wildlife, and instrument towers up to 80 ft. Driving off‑road 4WD vehicles required.
Work Schedule and Travel Dynamic 40‑hour week with 8‑10‑hour days, occasional 12+‑hour days, weekends, and split shifts. Field work is 75 % of the time; 25 % is office and lab duties. Over‑40‑hour work may be required. Frequent overnight travel (2‑4 × month) to labs and field sites.
Responsibilities
Perform and supervise field and lab assignments in diverse conditions.
Provide training and performance feedback to seasonal personnel.
Follow standardized protocols for sample collection; record data on handheld devices and computers; prepare, maintain equipment, and ship samples.
Conduct quality‑control checks on collected data.
Navigate to field sites and sampling locations.
Report activities and completed work per protocol.
Follow safety policy and procedures.
Resolve implementation issues and coordinate resolution.
Assist with routine administrative duties, special projects, and Research Support Services.
Key Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
At least 3 months of ecological field sampling or related experience (e.g., forestry, environmental, agricultural).
Preferred: undergraduate upper‑level coursework in ecology, forestry, environmental, or similar, or at least 6 months of field experience.
Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Problem‑solving, organization, and multitasking abilities.
High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Optimistic and good judgment in identifying hazards.
Valid U.S. Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
Ability to successfully pass background checks and pre‑employment drug testing.
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Salary Pay rate: $21.29 – $21.82 per hour.
