About the Position
Hampton County, located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking Fire Chief to lead its combination fire department consisting of both career and volunteer firefighters. The Fire Chief is responsible for planning, directing, and managing all aspects of Hampton County Fire-Rescue, which provides fire protection and rescue services across the county’s municipalities and rural communities. Key Responsibilities
Oversee daily operations of fire suppression, fire prevention, and training programs Lead and support both paid and volunteer personnel across multiple stations Develop and enforce department policies, procedures, and safety standards Manage department budget, procurement, capital improvement planning, and resource allocation Ensure readiness for emergency and disaster response Coordinate mutual aid and interagency cooperation with neighboring jurisdictions Serve as Incident Commander at major incidents and during emergency operations Report to the County Administrator and collaborate with elected officials as needed Minimum Qualifications
Ten (10) years of fire service experience, including at least five (5) in a command or senior leadership role Experience managing or working within a combination department is strongly preferred High school diploma or GED required, Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field preferred Valid South Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain Completion of NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 required Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with volunteer firefighter programs Proven skills in budgeting, grant writing, and resource management Familiarity with rural water supply operations and wildland/urban interface firefighting Strong communication, leadership, and public relations abilities Why Hampton County?
