The Billing Office Specialist reports to the Director of Business Services and receives work directives from them. The Billing Office Specialist is responsible for and manages the claims process, including accurate and timely claims creation, follow-up and correspondence with insurance inquiries as well as posting both insurance and patient payments accurately and timely. The billing Specialist will also work in maximizing the accuracy, efficiency and promptness of the claim life-cycle.
Duties/Responsibilities
Addresses and resolves billing problems and disputes
Prepares and submits clean claims to third party payers either electronically or by paper
Maintains all records in professional and acceptable manner
Follows up with insurance companies on denials or rejected claims. Resolves issues and resubmits claims and documents denial and rejections
Posts payments received and ensures electronic and manual payments are properly posted in the EMR
Updates patient information and demographics on computer
Verifies patient eligibility for Public Aid and Medicare and Commercial Carriers
Serves as a contact for billing and other insurance issues
Performs other duties as required
Competencies
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to make decisions and solve problems
Ability to prioritize and organize work
Ability to remain calm under stressful conditions
Ability to speak and write fluently in English
Ability to work in situations with limited interactions with others
Ability to work under minimal supervision
Proficiency in use of telephone system, computer, and basic office equipment
High level of interest in working with data
High level of mathematical and numerical abilities
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent
Knowledge of adult and/or pediatric office practice
Three (3) years successful experience in medical billing
AAS degree in Office Technology with healthcare specialty (preferred)
Education or experience in accounting or bookkeeping
Physical Requirements Little or no physical effort or strenuous activity other than incidental walking, standing, bending, reaching and carrying light loads (1-5 lbs.)
