The Department of Economic Security is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Accounting Supervisor 2. The Accounting Supervisor 2, under the direction of the Accounting Manager, provides financial and accounting support to Departmental management and external partners, including the General Accounting Office (GAO) and the Auditor General's Office (AGO). This role involves overseeing federal and state reports, assisting in the compilation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), and ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations.

This critical role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of our financial operations and maintaining strict compliance with all relevant governmental accounting regulations. The ideal candidate must have a comprehensive, expert-level understanding of the principles and pronouncements of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

Remote work is available one to two days a week in the office or on site, based on business needs. All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is authorized.

Job Duties

Financial Reporting : Prepare, review, and analyze all financial statements and reports, ensuring compliance with GAAP and GASB standards. Lead supporting document preparation for the ACFR.

Fund Accounting : Manage and maintain the general ledger for Governmental funds (General, Fiduciary, and Enterprise), ensuring compliance with GAAP.

Compliance and Audits : Research, interpret, and implement new GASB pronouncements to maintain full compliance.

Provide comprehensive financial and accounting expertise to DES management and external partners (GAO, AGO).

Support critical deliverables for the ACFR, Schedule of Expenditure of Federal Awards (SEFA), and Single Audit Requirements.

Prepare complex financial statement reports and high-level analyses.

Interpret the State of Arizona Accounting Manual (SAAM), GASB pronouncements, and Monthly Financial Review (MFR) policies.

Direct and assign accounting tasks for the Accounting Administration.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

GAAP, GASB, ACFR, SEFA, Single Audit Requirements.

Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Advanced accounting systems proficiency.

Project management and decision‑making.

Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Selected Preferences

Minimum one year of accounting experience.

Expert‑level knowledge of GASB standards, fund accounting, and governmental reporting.

Experience preparing an ACFR.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

Minimum five years of progressive accounting experience, including at least three years in a governmental agency or related field.

At least one year of higher‑level management experience.

Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) designation (preferred).

Pre‑Employment Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Year of accounting supervisory experience.

Background and reference check; completion of the E‑Verify process.

Driver's license (if driving is required).
