Overview
The Patient Benefits Representative will support the Oncology/Radiation Department at Texas Oncology. This full‑time position requires Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The role focuses on educating patients about insurance coverage, benefits, and payment options, and managing pre‑authorization and financial assistance processes.
Responsibilities
Obtain and verify insurance coverage information before each treatment and educate patients on benefits, co‑pays, deductibles, and out‑of‑pocket expenses.
Assess patients’ ability to pay and discuss payment arrangements; assist patients with financial assistance programs and complete required forms.
Prepare and submit reimbursement and liability forms, and forward patient information to the billing office.
Obtain pre‑authorization or referral approval codes prior to each treatment.
Review patient account balances and inform front desk of changes.
Ensure accurate entry of patient co‑pay amounts into the system.
Verify and update patient demographics and insurance coverage in the computer system per SOPs.
Maintain relationships with financial assistance providers and stay current on available programs.
Adhere to confidentiality, HIPAA, and all applicable state and federal regulations.
Maintain updated manuals, logs, forms, and documentation; perform additional duties as requested.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum three (3) years of pre‑services coordinator or equivalent experience required.
Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required.
Knowledge and application of CPT coding and HCPCS coding required.
Clear verbal communication skills and correct terminology usage required.
Must complete required e‑learning courses within 90 days of occupying the position.
Associate’s degree in Finance, Business, or four years of revenue cycle experience preferred for senior level.
Minimum three (3) years of pre‑services coordinator experience and two (2) years of patient benefits experience required for senior level.
Demonstrated knowledge and application of insurance coverage, benefits, and terminology required for senior level.
Physical Demands Perform essential functions with full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients and handling items up to 40 lbs. Must be able to sit or stand, talk, hear, and read and hear within normal range.
Work Environment Work involves exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and medical preparations typical of an oncology/hematology clinic environment. The job requires in‑person interaction with co‑workers and management and may involve minimal travel by automobile.
