Position Overview

The Financial Counselor represents the patient and Singing River Health System (SRHS) in all aspects of patient responsibility in a joint effort to resolve all patient amounts due in a feasible and amicable manner. He/She handles questions regarding patient accounts in an efficient and timely manner while displaying empathy and professionalism. The Financial Counselor educates patients and their families as to the SRHS policy and procedures regarding various payment sources for services rendered. This requires fundamental knowledge of Singing River Health System policies and the various payment options available to a patient including financial assistance.

Responsibilities

Identify/screen patients for possible assistance program eligibility.

Perform careful financial evaluation of patients and take actions most beneficial to SRHS while considering the patient.

Communicate with patients from diverse educational backgrounds in a neat and professional manner; be firm and decisive, yet courteous, tactful and empathetic.

Make decisions regarding methods of payment in a self-supervised manner; handle frequent interruptions.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Graduate, or equivalent, required. College courses in healthcare, business, or finance preferred.

License:

N/A

Certifications:

Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR); Certified/recognized as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is preferred. Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days).

Experience:

A minimum of one (1) year experience in medical terminology, insurance regulations, professional billing procedures, and collection regulations required. One (1) year of financial counselor experience preferred or a minimum of three (3) years in a healthcare revenue cycle related field with emphasis on insurance and billing. A minimum of one (1) year customer service experience performing registration, scheduling, and insurance verification required. A minimum of one (1) year experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.

Practice Administrator and/or Service Line Practice Administrator

Special Demands Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Proficient computer skills (keyboard, MS Outlook, Word) and ability to use office technology (telephone, fax, etc.).

Physical Demands Work is moderately active: sits and moves about the office and facility; may travel to another facility within the SRHS service area. Occasional lifting or moving of objects; exposure to body fluids, sputum and tissues with potential infectious disease risk. Repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and fingers when using standard office equipment. Ability to perceive sounds at normal levels and to focus visually on forms and data on a computer monitor and printed materials. Must be able to stay active for extended periods and work shifts as assigned, including possible changes for hospital needs.

Mental Demands Must demonstrate keen mental faculties and decision-making abilities. Must have superior communication skills (spoken and written) and emotional stability to handle high-stress situations. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and ability to multi-task in complex situations. Ability to maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships within SRHS and with other organizations.

Special Qualities Must possess superior customer service skills, professional etiquette, and be proficient with computer systems (keyboard proficiency) and MS Outlook/Word.
