Brown University Health SUMMARY: Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, performs variety of non-medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Such activities include, but are not limited to, transporting patients to and from Operating Room; picking up and/or delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures and the like. Assists in preoperative scrubs; assists in lifting, positioning and supporting patients. Cleans and prepares equipment utilized in surgical procedures; prepares material for sterilization. Assists in cleaning and maintaining the operating rooms. Assembles charge form packets. Transports patients to and from the surgical suite. Reviews preoperative patient charts to ensure forms are signed and tests are completed; informs appropriate nursing personnel of discrepancies. Assists in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available (e.g., blankets, solutions, syringes). Cleans furniture and equipment between cases. Obtains necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedures. Assists in prepping patients for surgery; assists with preoperative scrubs; lifts and moves and positions patients; supports and holds patients for spinal anesthesia injection and similar procedures. Routinely inventories, requisitions, receives and stocks supplies in established areas (including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes) to ensure availability. Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various hospital areas (pharmaceuticals, blood and plasma, routine department supplies). Delivers cultures and surgical specimens to designated areas of the Hospital for analysis as appropriate. Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the Operating Room (washing equipment, stocking supplies, cleaning room, washing stretchers, changing light bulbs, etc.). Cleans, dries, packages and seals a variety of supplies and material to be sterilized (washing, assembling and wrapping basin sets). Occasionally operates steam/water pressure sterilizers to clean and sterilize items. Assembles patient record packs of charge slips appropriate for specific procedures, to be completed by others. Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required. Ability to recognize changes in a patient\'s condition and report to nursing personnel. Ability to perform simple numerical calculations to requisition supplies. Knowledge of aseptic techniques to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment and materials. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns. Ability to read, write and understand English, with ability to perform simple numerical calculations. One to three months on-the-job training and experience. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Physical ability to transport patients, assist in lifting and positioning, and clean/set up equipment. Works in the Operating Room area and is exposed to odors, bodily fluids, etc., when assisting with patients. Required to work for extended periods standing during preoperative procedures. Some exposure to chemical fumes and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms. Frequent standing, walking, lifting and carrying to clean equipment, replenish supplies, transport patients and materials, and stock areas. Hazards of injury are minimized by adherence to safety precautions. Pay and Employment Details
